Summer Tips for Senior Skin Care

As a senior, it becomes increasingly more difficult to take care of your skin. The hot Idaho sun can take a toll on your skin, so it’s important to develop a good skincare routine for the summer months. Here are a few tips that you can incorporate into your daily life to help you look and feel the best you can.

1. Wear Sunscreen

It’s important to wear sunscreen when you are outside in the summer for long periods of time. As you age, your skin has a more difficult time recovering after a sunburn. Sunburns entail pain and can potentially lead to bigger problems, so it’s a good idea to get a sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF protection. One application of sunscreen won’t do it if you’re out in the sun for long enough, so it’s equally important to reapply every hour and a half to two hours.

2. Washing Your Skin

It gets very hot during Idaho summers and depending on the person, it can cause a lot of sweat. Sweat makes your skin dirty and clogs pores. Older skin requires a more gentle soap than usual, so don’t use just any face and body wash as most contain harsh chemicals. You also shouldn’t scrub the skin too roughly and can cause irritation. If you do experience irritation, you can go into your local dermatologist to receive a recommendation on skincare for your skin specifically.

3. Medication Effects

Before going in the sun, you should make sure none of your medications have side effects when you are exposed to UV Rays. Medications can react in different ways when you’re in the sun, so make sure there are no side effects from extended exposure.

4. Staying Hydrated

Although always important, hydration is key during the summer!
Being dehydrated can take a toll on your skin, drying it out among other effects. Drinking lots of water will not only make you feel better, but will also help your skin retain moisture, too. This limits the amount of aging in the skin that occurs so your skin looks healthier. Hydrated skin will both look healthier and reduce wrinkles, so be sure to have some H2O’s with your UV’s!
