As we get older the little things become more important to us than the big things, but sometimes remembering the little things is the hardest part. Our brains are irreplaceable, so we need to give them the best care we can. Here are some ways to keep your brain happy and healthy so that you can remember those little moments.

Brain Boosters

#1

Where do you begin you might ask? As with most health planning, the first step is exercise! Getting about 30 minutes of exercise a day is crucial to not only maintaining a healthy brain but also maintaining a healthy body. A small amount of daily exercise can go a long way. Walking is one of the best ways to get that daily amount you need as a senior, so go on a walk with your family, spouse, or even get a walking group together. Exercising daily can reduce your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and strokes. All of those can lead to memory loss so reducing your risk of those will also reduce your risk of potential memory loss!

Next, you need to invest in a healthy diet. Having a balanced and healthy diet as a senior is good for your brain! It has been shown that the Mediterranean diet is one of the best diets for the brain. This allows you to still be able to eat everything but just in a smaller portion. This diet is high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and much more! People that follow these diets have shown to be less likely to have memory issues over time.

#3

Keep your brain busy: like exercise, but for your brain! Keep your brain busy by playing games that make you think. Crosswords, word searches, sudoku, and even Bingo are all popular choices. Card games are a great way to keep your brain active and healthy while also having fun. The classic book club is also a great way to keep your brain engaged! Continuing to engage in these mentally challenging activities will help you to keep your mind in a sharp state.

Staying social is the final way to make sure your brain is staying healthy. It not only helps with keeping your mind sharp, but it also helps boost your mood! Senior centers are a great way to meet people and socialize. There are tons of senior held events and places that give senior discounts, so get together with friends and keep making those memories.

Resources

As a senior you have access to resources that can help you keep your brain sharp. Senior discounts are one of those perks! Make sure to ask if places have senior discounts because a majority do. Take advantage of those around you who are seniors; it is never too late to make a new friend. Also, your assisted living homes have tons of planned activities that you can participate in.
