Homemade Decor for the Holiday Season

The colder months of the year, minus the holidays, can get quite boring for seniors. As a senior, you sometimes can’t do high-risk activities like skiing and should try to avoid cold weather to keep your immune system in tip top shape. So, what is there to do during the winter as a senior?
Although there are plenty of alternative activities during the winter, today we’re going to focus on making holiday decor. Making holiday decorations is the perfect way to entertain yourself for hours while sprucing up your assisted living residence!

Wreath

A classic holiday decoration that can be fun to make is a wreath. This has been a staple for Christmas for a long time. The great thing about making a wreath is how creative you can get with it. You can choose the classical route and make a traditional wreath out of tree branches, or you can choose to make something more modern. Today, people make wreaths out of ribbon, bells, Christmas ornaments, spools of thread, and pretty much anything in between. This is a decoration that you can get really creative with and make it your own.

Tree Ornaments

As another holiday classic, tree ornaments are a must. These little things don’t take long at all to make, and you can crank out a bunch of them to fill up your tree this Christmas. You can be even more creative with these than you can with the holiday wreaths. Let your creativity run wild and create what you think looks good out of whatever material you want. There are no boundaries on these decorations. If you need some inspiration to get you started, there are plenty of great ideas all over the web. You can take these ideas and make them your own by adding extra steps. If you’re looking for something more basic, you can just buy some premade ball ornaments and then paint what you want on them. This is a great activity to do with your grandchildren; they’ll love it just as much as you!

Stockings

Although less commonly homemade, making stocking is a great use of your time during the winter. Stockings can be difficult if you don’t know how to sew, but what better time to learn? Not only this, but there are also premade kits that give you all the pieces necessary to complete the stocking. These are a great option if you have new grandchildren. Making them a stocking now that is quality and they can keep for the rest of their lives is a great gift for them.
